Ovarian Cysts Overview

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop in or on the ovaries. They are common, especially in people who have not yet gone through menopause.

Many cysts form as part of the normal menstrual cycle (called functional cysts).

  • Most ovarian cysts are harmless
  • Many cause no symptoms and go away on their own
  • Some cysts can grow larger, cause pain, or need monitoring
Important Note

Ovarian cysts are less common after menopause. While most are still benign, cysts found after menopause are usually investigated more carefully to rule out any serious causes.
